Day 2 notes
Early pirates of the 16th and 17th centuries began in the Caribbean. They used cannon as a weapon which does a lot of damage. They also used pistils.  They had their own native language.

Why are pirates associated with rum/alcohol?
Pirates needed things to do so they drunk also to stay awake and be aware of their surroundings. Rum and alcohol was a part of the triangular trade.  The rum trade was more important in Jamaica than anywhere else. The water wasn’t to their liking so they drank alcohol.

Which ships did pirates use and why? Sloops were very fast and it was good to move around other pirates. What type of maintenance did they need?  Careening and Oakum.
They use to calculate the magnitude. They simple didn’t know where they were going
Pirates in countered lots of things.

Feeding the fleet/ they didn’t really have lots of food, thy normally just ate alcohol. They liked meat. They were meat eaters but he didn’t have any taste back then because the salt they used was salt water.

Day 3 notes
Pirate Flags
They were used to signify who they were. Pirates would put up there flags to show who they were. The Jolly Roger flag was captured by British seamen in 1790.

Two Eras of Pirates.
Technology was different from golden age of piracy than modern day piracy.  Modern pirates aren’t looking for a fight like old piracy. There golden age of piracy was a different location than the modern day piracy
Pirates had many punishments brutal punishments.
Marooning was being left on an island.  Hanging was another punishment.

This research paper taught me things about Blackbeard I had no idea about. You would think he was a ruthless cutthroat, but he was actually lenient to most of his enemies. He didn't kill anyone according to the records. My research paper shows how media and books and change things. I wouldn't change anything actually. I am very confident in this paper.

Blog Post 8 ( Research )

Question: Which Myths about Blackbeard are True ?

Thesis Statement : Blackbeard is among the most famous in the history of piracy. Some of the myths were made by Blackbeard himself, and some were from the work of authors. Most of the myths were based off of some truth about Blackbeard.

What inspired me to do a research paper on Blackbeard was when we had a group project and his name caught my attention. I started asking questions about him and I wanted to learn more. What his actual name? Was he a ruthless cutthroat? Why did they call him Blackbeard? What was he remembered for? Those are some ideas and some things I want to research more on. Some challenges I may have is putting  all the research into a paper.

One punishment that pirates used was Marooning. Marooning was to abandon someone who didn't go by the rules on an island and they would leave them purposely to die. This is not as bad as the other punishments, but its still horrible. Just knowing their intentions was to kill someone on an island with no food and shelter. I don't agree with this, honesty they could've left them food and leave them their for a couple of days, basically like jail. I am sure they would've learned from their mistakes.

Lets say I went back in time to the "Golden Age of Piracy." Meeting a women pirate would be interesting because you wouldn't expect a women to be a pirate, but I did. Her name was Mary Reed.

She actually fooled me. When I first saw her I thought she was a man, but that's just how
she grew up. She was very firm and she fought like a man. Mary would kill men like it was nothing. Growing up around death  I guess made her that way. Her dad, brother, grandmother, and husband died.  Of course she got re-married only because  she was "charming" to those she fell in love with. Mary's pirate career ended, in October 1720. She was captured, by Captain Barnet in a desperate battle.

Many people aren't very sure if Henry Morgan was fiction or not. One interesting fact about Henry Morgan was he married his uncles daughter, but had no children. Back in those times it was okay to marry a relative. It was said that Henry Morgan was the “Captain Morgan” that joined Christopher Myngs fleet in 1663, but no ones really sure. Henry Morgan wasn't always one of the most rapacious, ruthless and unprincipled villains of his age, but he also had a rags-to-riches life.

Henry Morgan managed to survive from slavery and those who were regained their freedom were usually released penniless, homeless, without prospects in the New World and without any means of returning to the Old World."Sources Consulted"
